Historic day for Auckland AFL as Women’s league kicks off

The newly created Auckland AFL Women’s competition kicked off at Colin Maiden Park over the weekend.

The new competition will feature two teams for the first season with the intention of adding to that number in 2021.

The Central Eastern Blues and Norwest Magpies went head to head for the first time, and it was the Magpies who were victorious.

Maggie Land made history as she kicked the first goal of the competition for the Magpies and was superb all game.

Caitlin Hannah and Rubee-Leigh Poata were also great for the Magpies as they showed off their skills in front of a big crowd.

Moana Va was best for the Blues. Va played in the ruck for the majority of the game and had multiple disposals.

Alice Roy was also strong. Playing in defence, Roy had a busy game a down back but never gave up and was giving it her all.

The Blues goal scorer was Shanon Hopihana after a nice build up out of defence and down the right flank.

The next game is this Sunday at Parrs Park in Oratia.
