Mykelti Lefau to make his AFL Debut

New Zealander Mykelti Lefau will make his AFL debut this Sunday for Richmond in their Round 2 match against Port Adelaide after being named on the interchange

The 25-year-old was elevated from Richmond’s VFL program last month as a Supplementary Selection Period selection. He also played in in the Clubs Community Series match against Collingwood giving him his first taste of AFL at the top level.

The 195cm 25-year-old, who was born in New Zealand and initially moved to Melbourne over a decade ago to pursue a rugby career, has enjoyed a remarkable rise to the top level.

Prior to the Pandemic, Lefau embraced every opportunity presented to him, playing a couple games for the Casey Demons in the VFL, dominating in the AFL New Zealand National Combine and also representing New Zealand in the Senior New Zealand Falcons side on numerous occasions including the 2017 International Cup.

Joining the Richmond VFL program in 2022 he had his season cut short when he ruptured his ACL, ruling him out of the game for over a year, making his eventual return to play for the Richmond VFL side in June 2023. From there he was a regular starter for the side and one of their top performers, earning him opportunity to train alongside the AFL squad over the summer with a chance to fill their remaining spot on their squad for 2024.

The game starts at 6:00pm and will be televised on Sky Sport 9, or can be streamed through Watch AFL
