The AFLNZ Academy level 1 side will once again host a travelling team from the NSW Independent Schools programme in Wellington over the ANZAC weekend in April 2017.
The NZ tour comes off the back of a successful visit by a NSW Independent Schools representative team to NZ in April 2016 and is a great opportunity. The programme brings new faces to New Zealand and provides them with the unusual opportunity of playing an international. It will also be the first time the teams will meet in New Zealand’s Capital City.
The relationship between AFL New Zealand and NSW Independent Schools has grown over the past 2 years. It commence in 2015 with AFL New Zealand sending an Under 16 New Zealand team to NSW for a campaign and has now resulted in NSW travelling to New Zealand for the past two years.
In preparation for the upcoming campaign, 33 eligible players have been selected into the AFL New Zealand Academy. The Academy was created to provide a pathway for athletes to excel through AFL with the 2017 intake taking place on February 12. The programme is designed to improve the skills and fitness of athletes, through training and development. Academy athletes will participate in skill development, athletic testing and measurement, game play and personal development.
The two game campaign will be played at Hutt Park on Saturday April 22nd and Monday April 24th.
