Port Adelaide Indigenous Academy to tour NZ

The Port Adelaide Indigenous Academy will tour New Zealand in early December and take on the New Zealand Under 18 side at QBE Stadium on Auckland’s North Shore. 


The tour will have a variety of cultural, football and friendship experiences available to the travelling teams. The itinerary will include;

  • Experiencing Māori cultural performances at Mitai Maori Village in Rotorua
  • Relaxing in the Polynesian Spa
  • Experiencing the Pōhutu geyser at Puia Geothermal Park
  • Rafting down the rapids of the Kaituna River
  • Hiking one of the best walks in New Zealand on the Tongariro Crossing
  • A welcome function on arrival to unite New Zealand and Port Adelaide participants in preparation for the tour ahead
  • The opportunity to experience the New Zealand Haka as a challenge of respect.
  • A match against the U18 New Zealand side at QBE Stadium
  • After match functions and presentation of awards including a Māori feast prepared in the traditional Hangi style.

In 2014, the Port Adelaide Football Club partnered with the South Australian Aboriginal Sports Training Academy (SAASTA) and established the Aboriginal AFL Academy (AAA). Port Adelaide became the first AFL club to house and dedicate its time to the educational success of school-aged Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander footballers.

The Aboriginal AFL Academy program consists of the following:

  •  Squad of 36 students
    • 20 x Year 12 students
    • 16 x Year 11 students
  •  Completing a Certificate III in Fitness
  •  Mentoring from Port Adelaide Football Club players, coaches and staff
  •  Compete in football games and training workshops
  •  Participate in Port Adeliade Football Club’s AFL Indigenous Round
  •  Individual training and fitness program
  •  Cultural Camp
  •  Interstate and International Travel



A wider New Zealand Under 18 squad will be selected taking into consideration current club commitments and loading as key selection aspects.

The game will take place on Sunday, December 3rd and will be the first meeting between the two sides. The game will take place at QBE Stadium and entry is Free.
