Premiership coach signs on for 2019

2018 AFL New Zealand Premiership winning coach Izaak Williams has signed on for another season with the Central Giants as he prepares to lead them to back to back Premiership’s in 2019.

After finishing in third place in 2017 with 3 wins, Williams took over the Giants head coaching role in 2018 and guided the side to their first Premiership winning eight out of their nine games.

From Canterbury, Izaak has been involved with the sport in New Zealand for almost 10 years.

Williams has represented New Zealand at Under 20 level and also Canterbury at Provincial level but injuries have prevented him from being able to showcase his full potential in the playing arena.

His focus turned to coaching and in 2017 worked under New Zealand National and Central Giants head coach Rob Malone where he developed his craft.

Williams has a focus on setting up a good culture within the teams he coaches which he says sets up a solid foundation.

The 28 year old was recently reappointed as the head coach for the New Zealand U18 side after the 2018 side made history by winning in Australia in May.

“I’m looking forward to coaching the Giants again and build on what we started last season. Hopefully we can keep the majority of the group we had last season as they all came together, put the team first and was a great environment to be apart of.

I look forward to seeing the growth of the younger players coming through from last year with a successful U18 tour and what will be this year’s development players that where apart of last year’s level 2.

Good luck to all involved in 2019.”
