Saints blow away the Giants remain undefeated

The Southern Saints continued their dream run in round 5 of the 2020 AFL New Zealand Premiership after they thumped the Central Giants by 97 points at North Harbour Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The win was set up from a tremendous attacking first half by the Saints who piled on 8 goals to none.

The competitions leading goal kicker Harley Jenkins had 3 first half goals and was a strong target up front for midfielders George Read and Michael Boyce.

2019 Rising Star Xavier Bryham started well and provided a number of opportunities for his team mates.

The Giants midfield and forward line were trying everything but weren’t able to get past Saints defenders Andrew Bisset and Hayden Johnston.

Harison Manks was putting in all the effort for the Giants but he was unable to stop the run and carry from the ladder leaders.

The Giants had their first goal after the halftime break thanks to Mitch Weir and Brad Maloney quickly followed it up with a second before the Saints struck two of their own.

A 6 goal final term from the Saints gave them a big percentage booster as they push towards a spot in the 2020 Grand Final.

It was a heavy loss for the Giants and they will need to recover quickly as they come up against the Western Crows in round 6.

The hero:

Hayden Johnston and Andrew Bisset were huge in defence for the Saints. The pair stopped the Giants from scoring for nearly three quarters of the game.

The support cast:

Harley Jenkins continues to kick goals up front for the Saints. The marking forward kicked another 3 goals in round 5 to extend his lead at the top of the goalkicking leaderboard.

The consolation effort:

Say what?

“I think we continually challenge ourselves to get better and we don’t sit back and get complacent in the position that we are in. Our first, second and third efforts today were excellent and our ball control was great.” Sean Mayes, Southern Saints.

“It was hard work out there today but the effort we showed today was miles ahead of last week so we just need to move on and focus on the next round.” Wayne Sullivan, Central Giants Assistant Coach.
