The Southern Saints produced a stunning second half effort to record their first win in 2021, beating the Crows by 63 points in round 2 of the AFLNZ Premiership.
Trailing by a point at half time, the defending Premiers kicked 12 second half goals to demolish the Western Crows in a rematch of last year’s Grand Final.
The Crows couldn’t miss early on as they kicked 6 goals straight in the first half. Will Dickinson and Jay Green were strong in the middle of the ground, while Kris Wilder was providing a strong target up front.
The Saints could do no wrong in the second half as they kicked 3 quick goals in succession, straight after half time to get their noses in front. From there, it was all one way traffic.
The Saints backline was proving hard to beat as well with Andrew Bisset, Xavier Bryham and Nico Donnell-Brown locking down the Crows forward line.
James Kusel was booting them from everywhere in the final term as he combined with Harley Jenkins to kick 8 goals between them for the game.
Following their loss last week, the Saints showed what they can produce, and are hungry to become the first Premiership side to win back to back titles.
The Saints tackle the Northern Suns in round 3, while the Crows take on the Giants on Sunday, February 28th.
James Kusel’s second half was one of the most dominant performances in the competition’s history. The hulking centre half forward was tremendous on attack, kicking 3 second half goals to steer the Saints to a huge win.
The support cast:
Liam Mayes recorded his best game in the Premiership so far. The small forward supported the likes of James Kusel and Harley Jenkins as the Saints ran away with the win in a dominant second half.
The consolation effort:
Jay Green was back to his brilliant best. The 2019 competition’s Best and Fairest winner played an enormous game in the midfield for the Crows and was undoubtedly their best on ground.
“It was the perfect game after halftime. To come out and kick 12 goals in the second half shows how we can respond under pressure, after trailing at the main break.” Sean Mayes, Saints Head Coach.
“The Saints were way too good in that second half today. We just need to learn from that as we had a strong first half.” Jay Green, Western Crows.
