Savage to depart Saints

Shane Savage’s time at the Saints has come to an end, with the 29-year-old advised that he will not be offered a contract for the 2021 season.

“Shane was a much-loved member of our club and we’re very sorry to see him go,” Head of List Management James Gallagher said.

“Unfortunately with the reduction in list sizes and the positional make-up of our current list, we’ve made the very difficult call not to offer Shane another contract next year.

“His dedication and professionalism has been an asset to this club and we hope this isn’t the end of his footy career.

“To Shane, Sarah, Jett and Willow, thank you for giving so much of yourselves to the Saints. You’ll always be part of the St Kilda family.”

– James Gallagher

Savage joined the Saints after 56 games at Hawthorn, quickly becoming a popular member of the playing group with his commitment to elite standards and preparation.

A calm head in defence, Savage’s powerful run off half-back and penetrating kick became hallmarks of his game.

More recently, he played a crucial role as a mentor for emerging defensive trio Hunter Clark, Nick Coffield and Ben Paton.

Savage leaves St Kilda with 165 AFL games to his name and a legacy as a highly respected teammate and person.
