Summerland Primary relishing AFL KiwiKick opportunity

Summerland Primary is kicking goals when it comes to AFL.

The West Auckland Primary School took up the opportunity to have the Saints AVJennings AFL KiwiKick programme delivered in their school as part of a KiwiSport project which is partnered by Sport New Zealand and Sport Waitakere.

The programme focuses on developing fundamental movement and ball skills for boys and girls between 5 to 12 years of age.

AFL is fast becoming the number 1 sport at Summerland Primary.

Following the in school delivery, almost 50 students enrolled in the after school programme which is run for 6 weeks at the School. These students are keen and excited to learn more about the game and develop their fundamental skills.

Organised lesson plans, volunteer retention initiatives, resource kits and coaching accreditation are all features of AFL KiwiKick.

The fundamental skills of ‘Kick, Catch, Pass and Bounce’ are utilised through out the AFL KiwiKick Programme and are transferable to a wide range of sports.

AFL New Zealand Schools manager Reg Ranchhod is delighted that the programme has been so successful following the Covid-19 lockdown.

“It’s exciting to see the Saints AVJennings AFL KiwiKick programme back in schools. We provide high level experiences to schools and students, teaching fundamental skills and a new sport. This leads to further opportunities to gain and grow the students confidence in both play and sport, whether that’s  AFL KiwiKick or another sport or activity!  Great to be back providing even more opportunities for schools and students post the Covid lockdown.”

AFL New Zealand is working in conjunction with Sport NZ and a growing number of Regional Sports Trusts to ensure the outcomes targeted by the programme fall into alignment with the needs of local communities.

AFL New Zealand incorporates physical literacy within its programmes to encourage all participants to be Active For Life. This approach, endorsed by Sport New Zealand, is “the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding required by participants that allows them to value and take responsibility for engaging in physical activity and sport for life”

AFL KiwiKick provides a great skill base for students and their transition from primary to intermediate and on to secondary school sport. It’s for boys and girls, mums and dads. AFL KiwiKick is fun, it’s safe and it works!
