The AFL back in full swing this weekend

After a whirlwind four-game opening round, the AFL is back in full swing, ready for a fresh season. Following the results of the first round, the race to be crowned premiers in 2024 is on.

The Swans surprised Melbourne in the season opener, while Carlton staged an incredible comeback, overcoming a 46-point deficit to snatch victory from the Lions in the dying minutes. Damien Hardwick’s Gold Coast Suns also made a statement with a significant win over his former club, Richmond. Meanwhile, the Giants started their season with a decisive victory against reigning premiers Collingwood.

The 2024 AFL season promises excitement and drama. After record-breaking membership and attendance numbers in 2023, and a Grand Final that will be remembered for years to come, anticipation for the upcoming season is at an all-time high.

Could we see a Kiwi lift the trophy this season?
With 12 players of New Zealand heritage spread across 9 teams, the chances have certainly increased. Four of these players have already tasted premiership glory, adding to the excitement.

Will the Gold Coast Suns have a dramatic turn around under new coach?
One of the biggest stories of 2023 was Damien Hardwick’s move from Richmond to the Gold Coast. Following their impressive opening round victory against Hardwick’s former club, the Suns find themselves sitting at the top of the table for the first time in the club’s history. If their first game is any indication of what’s to come, they could emerge as unexpected premiership contenders.
