U18 NZ Hawks Wider Training Squad Named

An exciting group of young AFL players are closer to their dream of representing New Zealand, with the Under 18 New Zealand Hawks wider training squad being named.

The wider training squad is packed with players who will be looking to impress the selectors, in order to be named in the final Under 18 New Zealand Hawks squad later this year.

The major fixtures for the Under 18 New Zealand Hawks will be the annual two match series against the Victorian Amateur Football Association in October.

The U18 New Zealand Hawks Wider Training Squad features a number of players who were involved in that series last year, and will be looking to utilise the knowledge they picked up then to spark a victory for New Zealand.

Other players have been selected into the squad on the back of strong performances for the Under 16 New Zealand Hawks, or through strong performances at the recent Under 18 National Championships.

The selection of the wider training squad reflects the depth of talent currently available to AFL New Zealand High Performance National Manager Mick Coultard.

“I would be happy with any combination of these players in the final squad, they have made it this far because they have shown the talent and commitment required. There is still a lot of work to be done, but these boys can be proud of what they have so far achieved.”

Many of these players first played AFL in the Hawks Cup, an inter-school Secondary Schools AFL competition. Joe Baker-Thomas, currently on an International Scholarship with the St Kilda Saints, was noticed by the AFL club during the 2013 Wellington Hawks Cup.

Preparations for the 2014 Junior Hawks Cup are underway, with regional tournaments planned in term 4 for all major centres. For more information on the Hawks Cup and other AFL New Zealand Secondary School programmes, email Mick Coultard.
