Waitakere Senior Hawks Cup 2013

Recently Kelston Boys High hosted 2013’s first Hawks Cup Cluster tournament.

The Cluster consisted of Kelston Boys, Greenbay High, Waitakere as well as Aorere College who made the journey all the way from south Auckland to compete.

The showers that had threatened to put a damper on proceedings cleared by ball up and left Kelston’s fields in pristine condition for the athletes from each of the four schools to show their unique skills.

On the field all the teams put on a good show for the spectators and all games were battled out in good spirit. Going into the final round Green Bay High and Kelston Boys were both undefeated and marked up on each other eager to take home the spoils of victory.

Kelston with a clear size advantage were favourites at this stage, however at the end of the first half through a combination of tactics and determination Green Bay had effectively negated the size advantage of Kelston and were still well in the game trailing by less than a goal. Kelston stepped it up in the second half with a flurry of quick goals to take the game and the tournament.

In the end High Performance Manager Mick Coultard felt that the quality of the games were a great step forward in standard and several participants were selected to be part of the New Zealand High Performance Programme (NZ HPP). AFLNZ would like to thank the work of all the teachers, parents and all other volunteers involved in co-ordinating the teams as well as the players for helping create such a great tournament.
