The Wellington Senior Hawks Cup is set to be played on the 25th of February, at Hutt Park. A strong set of schools is lined up to contest for the title.
Current Wellington Junior Hawks Cup champions Wellington College will look to extend their dominance in the Senior division, however they will face strong challenges from St Patrick’s Wellington, St Patrick’s Silverstream and Porirua College.
For many participants, AFL is not their primary sport, however it fits well alongside their other codes. Opportunities exist for all to become part of the AFL New Zealand High Performance programme, with further opportunities to represent New Zealand on offer.
Current AFL New Zealand High Performance players are expected to play influential roles in the tournament, both on and off the field. Typically, High Performance players assist in the coaching of their school teams.
The 2013 Wellington Senior Hawks Cup saw Hutt Valley High School defeat all comers to secure the title. The field is wide open for a new school to take the title in 2014.
The 2013 edition of the tournament was also notable for being the first AFL appearance of Joe Baker-Thomas, from Porirua College. Baker-Thomas was named Player of the Day, and went on to be signed by the St Kilda Saints to an AFL International Scholarship.
Following on from the various Hawks Cup regional cluster tournaments, the AFL Senior Secondary School North Island Championships will be held on the 1st of March in Auckland. Wellington schools are invited to attend and test their skills against top schools from the Auckland, Manukau and Northland regions.
