Wellington AFL (WAFL) recently held a successful information night for Female players interested in taking up the sport in the nations capital.
The WAFL proposition was to bring together up to 30 players to learn the game over a series of development sessions blending into the 2019 WAFL season where the players will play a series of inter team games to apply new knowledge and skills culminating in a preparation game against a Wellington youth side leading up to a potential game against an Auckland or Canterbury Women’s Representative team in 2020. Longer term plans are to establish two Wellington club teams in 2020 and increasing to four teams in 2021.
The information night was well attended by potential players, many from the Wellington Gaelic Women’s team and all enthusiastically taking on the game and asking plenty of questions to understand it. The team have been reviewing a range of skill videos from the AFL New Zealand website to prepare them for the first training session on 18 August where we will start with the basics of the game.
The WAFL committee selected Matt Lewis (Eastern Bulldogs) and Peter Geale (AFL New Zealand Kahu) as coaches, while Gregor Kempt (Wellington Saints) will take up the role of manager.
The coaching team are keen to build a very positive team culture where players have fun with football, enjoy being part of a great team and develop as individuals and as a team to prepare for playing the game of AFL.
