The 2019 AFL New Zealand Youth Competition has drawn to a close after an exciting final week in Auckland, Wellington and Canterbury over the weekend.
The competition commenced in October and has been a huge success in introducing the game of AFL to new boys and girls in all three regions.
The final round saw each region have a little fun to wrap up the competition. From mixing grades to introducing the parents to the game, everybody enjoyed themselves.
Following the culmination of the Youth competition, the majority of the participants will move on to the next stage in the pathway, the AFL New Zealand Academy.
Academy athletes will participate in skill development, athletic testing and measurement, game play and personal development over an 8 week period.
From the Academy, AFL New Zealand Academy Level 1, Level 2 and New Zealand U18 Youth Girls teams will be selected consisting of 24 players each to play touring Australian teams in April next year.
AFL New Zealand would like to thank everyone involved in the 2019 Youth competition.
To all the players, parents, volunteers and umpires, we couldn’t have done it without you and look forward to bringing you a bigger and better competition when it all starts again in October 2020.
