AFL New Zealand Academy

The AFL New Zealand Academy has been created for both boys and girls to provide a pathway for athletes to excel through AFL.

The AFL New Zealand Academy commences in February 2024 for age groups born 2007 to 2013.

It’s the perfect opportunity for continued development from initial involvement at Secondary School or Youth Programme level, towards High Performance, New Zealand representative and international opportunities.

The 8-week programme is based at Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch training hubs, and focusses on improving athlete skills (kicking, catching, passing, and bouncing), accompanied with fitness, training, game and personal development programme

  • Testing Session, with results sent to Sydney Swans AFL Academy

  • Academy participants born in 2007 will also be part of the AFL New Zealand Premiership Development Player Programme  

This will lead to a number of opportunities for participants including,

  • AFL New Zealand Academy team selection
  • New Zealand representation
  • National Combine selection
  • Access to talent scouts and International Scholarships

Members of the AFL New Zealand Academy are selected from:

  • Secondary School Programmes
  • Intermediate School Programmes
  • School and Regional Combines
  • Current AFLNZ Youth players
  • Talent Identification Personnel
  • High Performance Trials

The AFL New Zealand Academy will commence on Sunday February 11th 2024

Academy Extra Optional Training Sessions

For born between 2007 (Boys) – 2008 (Girls)

Extra opportunities will be provided to attend Premiership games on Sundays and be involved with team preparation. Game day experiences will participants interact with AFLNZ Premiership coaching staff as well as providing on field player support, (hydration and messaging), to help develop game understanding through side line and on field support.

Following the finalisation of your availability, Academy coaches will assign you to a specific Senior Premiership team for the day.

For all other ages, the option to come along and view game and during the breaks, enter the field and listen to team chats.

AFL New Zealand Premiership Development Programme

Boys: For those born 2007

Girls: For those born 2008

The opportunity exists to be part of the AFL New Zealand Premiership Development Player Programme and commence a transition into senior football by representing an AFL New Zealand Premiership team.

AFLNZ Academy Footy Frenzy Weekend April 13th to 15th 2024 based at North Habrour Stadium including

  • Flights, Accommodation, Ground Transport, Meals
  • Attendance at the AFL New Zealand evening on Saturday evening
  • View the AFL New Zealand Men’s and Women’s Premiership Games
  • Provision of AFL New Zealand casual shorts, bag, jacket and playing NZ playing Uniform.
  • Mixture of Small games, AFL skill Ddevelopment
  • Athletic Development with AUT Millenium, based at AUT Millenium, Home of High-Perofrmance New Zealand in Auckland
    • Education Workshops
    • Individual Performance Assessments
    • Practical Training Session to improve Biomechanics
