Porirua teenager Joe Baker-Thomas recently visited Melbourne for intensive training and initiation into the rigours of the AFL. The young man was selected by the St Kilda Saints as their first ever New Zealand scholarship holder in April. Baker-Thomas was noticed by the St Kilda Saints at an AFL New Zealand U-18 High Performance Tournament. The AFL New Zealand High Performance pathway offers opportunities for young Kiwi athletes to have a career in the AFL.
