Bay of Islands college are Northland senior Hawks Cup Champions of 2016 after defeating Whangarei Boys High School in what was a tremendous game of AFL football at Kensington Oval in Whangarei.
In what was a great display of footy, both sides put together some strong team work to move the ball around the field with excellent passages of play and skill execution. The lead changed multiple times throughout the game and man of the match Zavarn Beattie (Bay of Islands) did his part by kicking 4 magnificent goals for his school. Whangarei Boys best player went to Wihihi Shelford who showed outstanding skill all over the park. Bay of Islands hit the lead with only minutes left on the clock and managed to hold on to what was an exciting game all round.
Both teams boasted players that have been involved with national representation with Ben Armstrong, Max Stuart and Southen Smith playing for Bay of Islands and Blake Williamson and Jordan Skinner representing Whangarei Boys High School.
For Bay of Islands College, the focus now moves to the North Island Championships where they will travel to Auckland to take on multiple schools and aim to become champions for the first time.
AFL New Zealand would like to say a big thank you to the respective College teams and organisers and in particular, Dave Scott from Bay of Islands College and Mark Oldridge and Mike Elliot from Whangarei Boys High School.
