AFL New Zealand Female Competitions range from starting the game at Youth Level all the way to representing New Zealand on the worlds stage.

Youth (Ages 10 – 17)

AFL New Zealand has created its Youth Competition for new players to participate in the sport of AFL.

It has a focus on improving athletes’ skills and fitness within a fun environment. This is achieved through a training, game and development programme that highlights the necessary requirements throughout the pathway.

Each age group includes a combination of skill development – kicking, catching, passing and bouncing – game play and personal development that takes place throughout New Zealand. This combination will lead to a number of opportunities for participants including AFL New Zealand Academy selection, New Zealand representationNational Combine selection, access to talent scouts and AFL International Scholarships.

There are several National Academy and age group teams, Academy Level 1, Academy Level 2, New Zealand Kahu Youth Girls and New Zealand U18. These teams are selected from the respective Academy levels and either tour in Australia or play a touring Australian based team in April each year.

Female Footy Frenzy (Ages 16+)

The Female Footy Frenzy events are a starting point for those new to the game and showcase the benefits to be gained through the social experiences and wellbeing generated by sport.

The event includes a focus on the fundamental skills and rules of the game and most importantly, the opportunity for participants to enjoy a game of AFL football.

The first ever Female Footy Frenzy Event took place in Christchurch, Hagley Park (Carlton Corner) on Sunday March 3rd this year in preparation for the inaugural AFL New Zealand Women’s Premiership held in Auckland on March 31st.

Scheduled events will be utilised by AFL New Zealand, the national sporting body, as an event based strategy to compliment and support local community initiatives to grow the game within the regions. AFL New Zealand has stepped up it’s efforts to cater for the growing demand for a provision of increased sporting opportunities for girls and women within the New Zealand sporting landscape.

With the AFL New Zealand Women’s Premiership scaling up from 2019 and taking place again in an increased format in February, March and April 2020, it is expected that a large number of the players selected for the AFLNZ Women’s Premiership will be made up from those attending the Female Footy Frenzy events.

The exciting prospect of the New Zealand Kahu’s first involvement in the 2020 International Cup to be held in Australia in August 2020 is another amazing addition to the Women’s pathway for AFL in New Zealand.
