AFL New Zealand gets first look at Koru Games

Last week, AFL New Zealand got its first look at the Koru Games, a massive multi-day sports tournament for Year 7 and 8 students across Canterbury and the wider South Island.

Held across three locations in Selwyn and Christchurch, the Games brought together more than 4000 students in over 500 teams from 74 schools. Over two days, AFL New Zealand held a pop up station at Foster Park, where hundreds of tamariki came to explore AFL and have a crack at a kicking challenge.

Hundreds of prizes were won, from footballs and caps to beanies, backpacks and drink bottles. Our Canterbury team was overwhelmed by the stations popularity which brought good vibes and a great atmosphere during students’ downtime.

The pop-up station was a strong introduction to the Koru Games for AFL New Zealand, and we’re now looking to bring a tournament into the event next year.
